Was shocked out of my Christmas bliss this afternoon upon seeing that not everyone is as fortunate as I am this year. On the way home from last minute shopping, I saw a man walking home, if he has a home, from the hospital, I gather (he had the plastic name band around his wrist), wearing no shoes, only surgical paper booties. He was stepping so carefully on the dirty city street as I walked by with packages and gifts in hand. Where was he going and why was he alone? I so badly wanted to give him something, but alas, had no shoes or anything else useful to offer.
I turned the next city block to find an aging homeless man sitting under a stairwell picking at some food that he had scrounged. Not exactly a Christmas Eve feast.
As we head into 2009, let us think of how we can give back to our local communities and those less fortunate. Think globally, act locally.
Merry Christmas!
